What's So Great About Gatsby

The great thing about The Great Gatsby is that the characters and their decisions also reflect life in America today (as well as in other countries). For example, Gatsby is great because he was a man
born into a poor family. Even with all the hardships, he managed to pave his way toward wealth and success. He's be a symbol for the "American dream" since many strive to reach that goal. However, he does have flaws which end up turning his life into a miserable one. The reasons behind why he strived toward all the wealth was to reach the social class of Daisy. Daisy was a stunning woman that caught Gatsby's attention and he wanted her to be his. Love seems to become his weakness in this story which ended up costing his life. Aside from Gatsby, there is Nick Carraway. He claims to be honest when it comes to others, but I don't think he is honest to himself. He doesn't hold back from telling people his thoughts, but it seems there is still confusion within himself. There are things he doesn't want to admit to. For instance, he seems in denial about liking Jordan Baker. Fitzgerald describes Daisy and Tom that way to show how twisted people in society can be. People in the world today find joy in putting others down. There are also people who can get away with things because they have the money to do so. Daisy's behavior is more on the complex side of things. She's very detached from the world and only cares for herself. Daisy can't seem to come to a conclusion with her feelings and tends to make things worse. She is someone I wouldn't let my brother date because it'd only leave him heartbroken. The last lines in the book: "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." I interpret this as, we continue to live our lives facing the hardships in life, but for some reason we are still drawn to the past. Currents will guide us where ever, but we continue to flow in the swaying motion of constantly going back and forth.
