Nick’s Cardinal Virtue
Nick’s cardinal virtue: “I am one of the few honest people I have ever known”.
This admission changes the way we view Nick because we now see him as a more reliable character. Unlike the others in the book, they aren't 100% honest to others and even themselves.
- Tom: arrogant, womanizer, extremely wealthy (and brags about it)
- Daisy: detached from reality, married to someone she truly doesn't love
- Myrtle: money hungry, tries to act sophisticated
- Jordan: dishonest, cautious among men
I don't find Nick to be arrogant, he's actually one of the most humble ones in the story. If you were to compare Tom Buchanan and Nick Carraway, you'll notice that Tom is one to brag about the riches he has, while Nick is reserved and would rather keep to himself.
