reveries- daydreaming
ingratiate- bring oneself into favor with someone by flattering
The real story of James Gatz (legal name of Jay Gatsby) was that he was actually from a poor family in North Dakota. He ends up working under Dan Cody at the age of 17 on a Yacht and learned from him (Gatsby was basically Cody's apprentice). Alcohol seems to be the reason why Dan Cody ends up dead since he was a heavy drinker. This is probably the reason why Gatsby doesn't drink since he knows it'll end badly. Money is something many people want. Ella (who was Cody's lover) kept the money all to herself and didn't bother giving the 25,000 that Dan left for Gatsby.
Dan Cody
- man who was in the portrait hung in Gatsby's bedroom
- self-made man, wealthy yacht owner
- "inhospitably dies"
Ella Kaye
- reporter and Cody's lover
- the millions of dollars went to her
- takes money for herself
Jay Gatsby
- hopeless romantic
-stuck in the past
Jay Gatsby can't seem to grasp the fact that the past can't be repeated. He wants to relive the love he had with Daisy that occured four years ago. Gatsby wants Daisy to tell Tom, "I never loved you" even though they managed to have a child together during that period of time.
