Hungry Joe Makes Sense
In today's reading we met Hungry Joe! The first character who has the traits of a more traditional soldier in books and movies. On p. 39, we read: "And suddenly it all made sense. Why not every night, indeed? It made sense to cry out in pain every night." This passage brings up the suffering Hungry Joe has gone through-- going on fifty missions. Traditional soldiers who endure all the things in the military tend to develop PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Although they are brave and heroic, it's traumatizing to fight for your life and see others fall before you. What makes sense how Hungry Joe has recurring nightmares. He is the most realistic character since he has fallen sick due to his experiences in the military. Instead of faking to be sick and get out of deadly missions, he actually pulled through each one.
