the making of an essay

Montaigne - a French philosopher, known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre

  • essay (french word) - to try or attempt

essay (for this course) - to try and make ourselves understood

The experience of writing essays reminds me of stressful times I endured to finish it by the deadline. Although, I usually do well with writing essays, but the emotions I feel during the process of creating one is chaotic. Previous English teachers of mine have complimented my writing even though I felt as though the essay I submitted wasn't good enough. The compliments encouraged me to be comfortable with my writing abilities. Before entering class today, essays to me were just multiple paragraphs to elaborate information that teachers wanted me to learn. Now I can view essays as a way to write for myself to be understood.
