my essay essay
Evil, it drives someone or something to do cruel things in the world. In the short story Young Goodman Brown written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Goodman Brown is a faithful follower in his religion along with his wife, Faith. One day he ventures out into the woods right before night engulfs the village of Salem and encounters a man. Although he doesn't want to proceed down the forest, his legs thought otherwise causing him to follow this man (whom he'd barely met) deeper into the forest. When he reaches a certain point, he sees those familiar to him committing evil deeds. He realizes the people he once trusted weren't who they truly were. Hawthorne communicates the theme of evil in life through foreshadowing, characterization and symbolism.
With the use of foreshadowing, Hawthorne develops the theme by creating tension for the revelation Young Goodman Brown will soon discover. Right in the story Faith is full on angsty emotions, "'pr'y thee, put off your journey until sunrise,.. a lone woman is troubled with such dreams and suh thoughts, that she's afeard of herself sometimes. Pray, tarry with me this night, dear husband, of all nights in the year!'" Young Goodman Brown's wife, Faith, feels anxious as to what will happen to her husband and even admits to having dreadful dreams. The reader can infer that this tension right at the beginning of the story will affect the main character drastically. As they depart, "Faith still peeping after him, with melancholy air, in spite of her pink ribbons." The choice of using "melancholy air" to describe the departure goes to show that things may turn sour onward as the story progresses.
The staff that the traveler offered to Goodman Brown as a guidance during his journey, resembled a "great black snake." Perhaps the staff was something that conjured up these evil visions or was a gift from the devil himself. In the story of Adam and Eve, the serpent who tempted Eve into eating the forbidden fruit was actually the devil taking a different form. The staff offered by the traveler may be the reason as to why the evil dream Young Goodman Brown experienced caused him to envision such thoughts.
The way the characters are described in the story are different with them in reality versus how Young Goodman Brown imagined them. In the beginning of the story Faith is presented as a soft spoken, innocent and loving wife. Faith is considered as a "blessed angel on earth" said by Young Goodman Brown. She is presented as a soft spoken, innocent and loving wife who is also obedient. The pink ribbons she wears radiate her bubbly innocence. As Young Goodman Brown witnesses the evil gathering, Faith's pink ribbons fall down from the sky. This made me think about fallen angels since Faith had converted to the evil side.
After Goodman Brown stumbles out from the forest, his happy, cheerful and loving demeanor is no longer evident. The experience ended up changing his for the worst. He became a cold man who lost trust in the people around him, even his wife who he loved so dearly in the beginning of the story.
