Notes From Today's Lecture

ethos
- MLK as a man of color, has faced the ridicule and suffering

-well informed about American history and the suffering faced by the people
-man of God, preacher - credible, biblical references

pathos- connecting to the audience with a sense of empathy and passion
- "... little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers." Through this quote Martin Luther King was inclusive with the people, not just focusing on those of color. He appeals to more than one color, race, religion, etc. The feedback he gets is applause and cheering which shows how many people agree with him.

- "But 100 years later the Negro still is not free." Without even listening to MLK say this aloud, reading this quote, the disappointment is evident. It reveals how after that much time, not much has changed. Humans who were just born with a different complexion were treated as though they were a different creature.

logos- logical reasoning of an argument
- "summer of our discontent" - allusion to Steinbeck, Shakespearean quote
^ original "winter of our discontent", shows MLK is well informed in literature

-"flames of withering injustice" this metaphor alone shows how the choice of words is specific to make a connection. The metaphors throughout the speech are consistent and provide imagery of the suffering/misery that was faced by those of color. Helped people follow his reasoning.

theme: our history of humanity is based on religious ethic, etc., America didn't act on "everyone is created equally"
