Self-Reliance: reliance on one's own powers and resources rather than those of others
The whole essay is finding out who we are and then focusing on it. "The power resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried."

Children, babies, and rude people who don't have a filter, are just being themselves aloud
we are aware of how people view us which causes us to be hindered from speaking our thoughts and exposing our true self/feelings
-in the world, if we don't express ourselves our voices "grow faint and inaudible"
Our society has grown more quiet and less assertive. Less voices are being heard due the constant fear of being put down or judged.
-we can't afford to be someone else, because that would be suicide
